Damping refers to the characteristic that the amplitude of any vibrating system decreases gradually due to external effects or inherent reasons of the system in vibration, and the quantitative characterization of this characteristic. The role of damping mainly has the following five aspects: (1) Damping helps to reduce the resonance amplitude of the mechanical structure, so as to avoid damage to the structure caused by the vibration stress reaching the limit; (2) Damping helps the mechanical system to quickly return to a stable state after a transient impact; (3) Damping helps reduce acoustic radiation caused by mechanical vibration and reduce mechanical noise. Many mechanical components, such as the housing of transportation vehicles and saw blades, are mainly caused by vibration. The use of damping can effectively suppress resonance and reduce noise; (4) It can improve the processing accuracy, measurement accuracy and work accuracy of various machine tools and instruments. All kinds of machines, especially precision machine tools, need to have high seismic resistance and dynamic stability when working in a dynamic environment, and their dynamic performance can be greatly improved through various damping treatments; (5) Damping helps reduce the ability of the structure to transmit vibration. In the design of the vibration isolation structure of the mechanical system, the reasonable use of damping technology can significantly improve the effect of vibration isolation and damping.
